Sue Rainsford - Photographer

Sue Rainsford studied History of Art and Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin, and since the completion of her degree in 2011 has begun to explore the potential realities we can construct through a literal manipulation of film photography. Her work focuses on imbuing visual art with a textural quality, so that more than one sense is required to fully appreciate a piece. Having travelled extensively her photographic works encompass a variety of cultures and climates, the atmospheres of which she attempts to reproduce in her painted pieces. She will commence a masters in Visual Arts in IADT in January.

I’ve been shooting a lot on my Yashica-D TLR more often then I’d ever think of.

It’s gotten to the point where if I am going out around Dublin for fun for street photography this is the first camera I put into my bag.

What has happened to me that I have regressed into film work? These days old photographers are making the leap from medium format/large format over to digital and the skills transfer very easily. Where as I on the other hand seem to be working in the reverse the more I shoot on these old cameras the more I want to do...

Aaron Lowry - Fine artist

Aaron Lowry received a Certificate in Art and Design at Coláiste íde College of Further Education in 2006. In 2010, he graduated with a BA (Honours) Degree in Visual Arts Practice at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT). As an emerging artist, Aaron has exhibited in a selection of Group Exhibitions including Kaleidoscope (2009) at IADT; Exit, Pursued by a Bear (2009)at Broadstone Studios; What Hiver (2009) at Studio 8 in Temple Bar Gallery and Studios; and This is Not Therapy (2007) at IADT.

Aaron's t work is based on a language where thoughts, facts and theories are organised accurately and neutrally. I typically engage with traditional modes of drawing such as pencil and often work in a collective series of multiple images. I also utilise digital photography as means of recording drawings of an ephemeral nature. This method of production lends to the predominately analytical and documentary quality of my work.

My most recent work is influenced by an interest in the idea of political power and how it is exorcised over the masses. This has led me to investigate how fear is often used to exploit and control people. The drawings forming my latest body of work are derived from the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List. The compositional structure of each drawing directly references the impact of Physiognomy, the defunct study of judging a character from facial features, on the way that composite drawings and images are constructed for use by government agencies in the USA such as the FBI.

Dee Walsh is an artist specializing in painting and drawing. Her work is a continuous investigation into the urban environment and its psychological effects. The integral geometry of the built environment is examined, and the everyday basic structures which influence and envelop our daily lives are manipulated and reconstructed.

This is achieved by layering several architectural experiences and approaching it in an architectonic manner. It is intended that a space is created for the viewer to construct and deconstruct using their own personal experiences.

Anthony cullen - Painter/Film Maker

Anthony Cullen is both a painter and filmmaker with an education steeped heavily in visual structure.
The themes that he explores in his work centre on existence and expressing consciousness.
His films also tend to have socio-realistic topics in them.

Anthony's paintings are largely portraits of people or animals and
collect character, story, subtext and place using only faces. The style is the familiar
contemporary environment of a TV or film screen with the frame size of the paintings
working out close to the aspect ratio of a wide screen TV and the de-saturated colours
simulating the colour schemes on many modern TV shows. He is also actively engaged
in the manipulation of his painted images digitally in a separate project.

Rachel Healy recently graduated with an Honours degree in Fine Art Painting from the Limerick School of Art and Design, LSAD. Her work serves as a commentary on image making and is rooted in the idea of storytelling and of the work of art as a metaphor for the artist’s voice and willingness to mediate meanings through their work. Animation pieces coexist alongside the drawings used to create them and become a unique history of the movement of their coming-into-being and immediate erasure, the removal of one subject allowing for the appearance of another.

John Fitzsimons - Fine artist

John graduated from DLIADT (Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology ) with a diploma in fine art printmaking in 1995 and joined Graphic Studio as a printmaker. He did editioning work for the likes of John Graham and Cliona Doyle. With the number and variety of artists there, John found the atmosphere stimulating and invigorating. Through his current job at Stoney Road Press, where he editions art, John has also worked with artists such as Charles Tyrrell, Donald Teskey, Dorothy Cross, Patrick Scott and Brian O’Doherty.

In parallel with his printmaking, John kept “notebooks” of art in gouache and acrylics. This formed the basis of his art career. He returned to DLIADT to complete a degree in fine art in 2000 and is a member of La Catedral Studios since April 2011..

Deborah Smith recently graduated with an Honours degrees in Visual Arts Practice in Dun Laoghaire’s Institute of Art, Design and Technology AIDT. She specialised in 2D Drawing and Video work. Her work focuses on particular moments that we often let pass us by. Smith explores the familiar and heightens the banal through experimenting with different forms of display. She presents her work in a way that allows the viewer a moment of reflection.

Artist Statement

My work focuses on my fascination with the familiar and intensifying aspects of that through the creation of abstract forms using video, sound, paper and found objects. Because of the subject matter of the work, the image is instantly recognisable to the viewer, yet it is an image that usually goes by unnoticed. I wish to recreate and enhance these images through basic materials and display. By capturing my visual and aural experience of the banal I create a moment of reflection for the viewer by focusing attention on the contradictory element of noticing the unnoticed.

Damian O'Donohue graduated from the IADT Dun Laoghaire after studying Graphic Design Communications and Interactive Media. He now works as an Illustrator, utilising Paints, Pastels, Pens & Pencils.
While preferring the hand-made approach to image making, Damian also creates images digitally. His work mostly consists of character illustrations, with an emphasis on combining the 'cute and familiar' with the 'grotesque and outlandish'.
